Thousands of people lined the streets of Wellington this weekend for a carnival extravaganza. The Wellington Carnival Committee held the event on Saturday, September 28 which included floats, majorettes and a special tribute to a carnival stalwart. The evening brought an international flavour with visitors from Wellington’s Portuguese twin town Torres Vedras making an appearance. ASSIM Associação De Intercâmbio Municipal – Torres Twinning Association – attended along with Roberta’s Carnival Club and their entry, Swarming in From Portugal. Then the procession moved off from Rockwell Green, making its way through the town centre before ending at the Longforth Farm roundabout. Writing in the programme notes, mayor of Wellington, Councillor Janet Lloyd said: “The Wellington Carnival Committee work very hard all year to put on this wonderful event and are totally supported by the community groups to put on a great show on the day. “Last year was the first time that the carnival was held after the pandemic and it is great to see that Wellington Carnival has again attracted people from far and wide to see the entrants and floats and of course, raising an amazing amount of money for local groups and causes. “Wellington Town Council is again this year giving a financial contribution to the Carnival Committee to cover the costs of portable toilets and other expenses to make the carnival a successful and enjoyable evening for everyone.” The Carnival Committee also held the event with a touch of sadness following the death of long-standing organiser Josephine Chave. After the Carnival Motor Show took place, the evening started with a two minutes silence with two firework rockets let off. A carnival spokesperson said: “Josephine spent over three decades running Wellington Carnival. Originally, she was alongside John Nash and Garry Cox and then in her own right from 1995 until 2015, assisted by her family and friends, and later, by Dave Rylatt. “The Carnival Committee are dedicating this year's carnival in memory of Josephine, and their thoughts go out to her family.” Next year's carnival takes place on Saturday, September 27, 2024.
