Both parties claim victory in Macedonia election

(12 Dec 2016) Supporters of both Macedonia's opposition and governing coalitions were claiming victory on Sunday in the country's general election. The vote was called two years early as part of a Western-brokered agreement to end a paralysing political crisis. Early returns showed the governing conservatives with a slim lead. With 78.4 percent of polling stations reporting, the state electoral commission's website said early Monday that the conservative coalition led by premier Nikola Gruevski's VMRO-DPMNE party had 39.05 percent and the Social Democrat-led coalition of Zoran Zaev was close behind at 36.28 percent. VMRO-DPMNE supporters celebrated in front of the party headquarters in downtown Skopje, the capital. Activists in the opposition coalition, however, claimed their projections pointed to a victory by their side and gathered in celebration outside party headquarters in Skopje.
