So today’s 11:11 is about my favorite book - Holly Whitaker’s “Quit Like a Woman” - and honestly, I’ve read it three times and I’m probably due for a fourth. I used to drink. A lot. Like, a LOT. And I tried quitting multiple times, stop-start-stop-start, you know how it goes. But this book? It’s different. Yes, it’s quit-lit, yes it’s got the personal story, but it’s also deeply POLITICAL. It’s feminist. It’s about Big Alco and how they’ve manipulated us - especially women - the same way Big Tobacco did. There’s serious research in here about how alcohol became marketed as feminist rebellion, like we’re liberated because we drink. Wild. Holly also talks about why AA didn’t work for her (and honestly, didn’t really work for me either), and she took a lot of flak for that. But here’s the thing - leaving your ego on the floor, which is central to AA, doesn’t work when women’s egos are already on the floor. This isn’t me saying nobody should ever drink. But if you need a bigger reason than yourself to give something up? This book is FULL of those reasons. And it’s perfect for dry January, or any January really. Happy overshare January!
