(2 May 1999) English/Nat The head of human rights for the United Nations Mary Robinson has condemned the deliberate ethnic cleansing of Kosovo's ethnic Albanians and says it must not be allowed to go unpunished. Robinson called for accountability saying there must be no impunity. Her comments came during talks to refugees lining up at the border to enter Macedonia from Serbia's southern province of Kosovo. The United Nation's chief of human rights visited Macedonia to get first-hand accounts of the plight of hundreds of thousands of refugees on Sunday. Mary Robinson greeted those who'd been expelled by Yugoslav military and paramilitary forces. She called the situation in Kosovo a deliberate policy of ethnic cleansing and said it was unacceptable. In addition to refugees, Robinson spent a moment chatting with Richard Gere. Gere, who has sometimes been harangued by media for his fact finding trip, told Robinson it has taken him six days to get a handle on the situation and the plight of the refugees. Her visit is intended to underline that human rights are at the basis of the issue in the Kosovo war, in which NATO is bombing Yugoslavia to try to force it to accept autonomy for Kosovo's majority ethnic Albanians. More than 5,000 refugees have found temporary shelter at the camp in Blace. Robinson said Europe is not doing enough to help solve the refugee crisis in neighbouring countries.
