Victorian News Reporting on China

The story of how China was reported on during the Victorian Era, from two month sea voyages to the development of the electric telegraph. In the mid-19th century China was a distant and mysterious oriental kingdom - the British public was for the most part ignorant about what happened there, and those living in China were essentially cut off from their home country. In 1858 the China Express and China Telegraph were launched with the aim of closing the gap between China and Britain, by providing accurate and comprehensive news reporting on China. Whilst their mission was in part stymied by the almost two month oversea journey between the two nations, they were still ahead of their time in offering it's readers in-depth news reporting on China, and there are many untold stories hidden within the paper's pages. Reading the paper allows us to appreciate how precious news from China would have been at the time (especially for entrepreneurs doing business with the country), and helps us understand how Victorian Era perceptions of China were moulded by it's articles. Gradually the development of the electric telegraph acted to lessen the time required for an article's dispatch to Britain, until by the 1880s news stories were able to be transmitted across the world almost instantly.
