With its 72 roaring waterfalls as well as secluded valleys, flower-filled alpine pastures and secluded mountain hotels, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of Switzerland's most important nature reserves. "Lauter Brunnen" - the name of the village alone already evokes the singularity of this landscape: the valley of Lauterbrunnen has 72 waterfalls. The most emblematic is the Staubbach waterfall, one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, which flows from a rock wall almost 300 meters high. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who visited the valley in 1779, found inspiration in these roaring waters to compose his famous poem “Gesang der Geister über den Wassern”. In the heart of the “Schwarzer Mönch” mountain, hidden behind impressive rock walls, the Trümmelbach waterfall offers an equally grandiose natural spectacle. Nearly 20,000 liters of water per second rush along ten waterfalls of glacial origin totaling a height of about 200 meters. You can only attend this show in summer, by taking an elevator in the tunnel. The village of Lauterbrunnen (795m) is the starting point for the most famous tourist destinations in the Jungfrau region. A rack railway connects Lauterbrunnen to the sunny terrace of Wengen on the eastern flank of the Lauterbrunnen valley and the Kleine Scheidegg, where you change trains to climb the Jungfraujoch. On the opposite side is Mürren, a holiday resort, accessible from Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg. Departing from Stechelberg, the cable car takes you to the top of the Schilthorn, at an altitude of 2971m, famous for having served as the setting for the filming of a classic from the James Bond 007 series: "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" . WENGEN : The Jungfrau in the background, flanked by the mighty panorama of the Bernese Alps, the spectacular Lauterbrunnen valley at your feet: Wengen offers a mountain experience of the unadulterated kind. In the car-free Lauberhorn village, which is only accessible by the Wengernalpbahn, relaxation is guaranteed, whether hiking or sunbathing on the terraces of hotels and restaurants. The resort is located on a sunny, wind-protected terrace at the foot of the Jungfrau, 400 meters above the Lauterbrunnen Valley at 1274 m above sea level. The car-free village, steeped in tradition, offers a family-friendly skiing and hiking area all around the Männlichen and Kleine Scheidegg. With its wooden houses inciting you to nostalgia, the many holiday chalets scattered here and there and the hotels of the Belle Époque, this resort in the Bernese Oberland has managed to preserve the authentic character of a mountain village. The terrace, which opens wide to the south-west, guarantees above-average sunshine. The car-free village of Wengen has been accessible since 1893 by the "Wengernalpbahn" from Lauterbrunnen, where car parks await cars. You can easily reach the most important excursion destinations in the Jungfrau region from Wengen. From Kleine Scheidegg, you can observe climbers on the north face of the Eiger through a telescope – one of the most spectacular and difficult climbs in the world. Changing at Kleine Scheidegg, you arrive by train to Jungfraujoch.
