Cortin is the secret boss of Deltarune: Chapter 5 – Scorched Meadow, based on the corkboard in the hidden room beside Asgore’s shop. BACKSTORY ──────────────── Before Kris and Susie arrived, Cortin served as royal scribe to the King of the Dark World (an extension of Asgore’s obsession with uncovering Hometown’s mysteries). Cortin thrived on this attention, but when Asgore turned his focus toward Kris, Cortin grew bitter and unstable. After Asgore’s disappearance, the Seven Nobles banished Cortin for misconduct. Isolated and surrounded by his notes and yarn, he fell into despair until a mysterious “benefactor” offered him a Shadow Crystal. Through it, Cortin foresaw Asgore’s return via a new Dark Fountain. Waiting patiently, he escaped when the Fountain appeared, determined to reclaim Asgore’s attention by confronting Kris and Susie. IN-GAME ──────────────── As the Fun Gang travels from the Field of Pink and Gold toward the King’s Kingdom, NPCs hint at Asgore’s return. A blocked path prevents early exploration, but after defeating Rouxls Kaard near the gate, players can backtrack to the now-accessible outer ruins. Among broken shops lies Cortin’s Shop, where he greets you with a friendly, faux-southern charm, selling useful items and offering a “secret route” into the inner Kingdom. Following his instructions leads the party to a dark, paper-strewn chamber (the Blank State), where Cortin reveals his true form and traps them inside. His battle alternates between Determination and Perseverance soul modes, using his thumbtack sword to bind players in yarn. The ACT button can become tangled, forcing attacks until it’s freed after dealing enough damage. When defeated, Cortin admits his wrongs and accepts his loneliness, choosing to become an item for the party. A violent victory grants Tactack, a sword-armor for Kris, while a pacifist win gives Pinscot, a pincushion-like ascot for Ralsei.
