Perhaps no musical art form has been more highly restricted during the pandemic than choral singing. Due to risks caused by dispersed aerosols, conductor and MSU's Director of Choral Programs David Rayl has witnessed the struggles vocalists have endured. But this holiday season, nothing can contain the excitement of MSU's masked choir members as they prepare for the celebratory return of choral singing on the stage of Wharton Center's Cobb Great Hall. Led by Rayl, members of MSU Choral Union, University Chorale, and State Singers join the MSU Symphony Orchestra for a concert of inspiring and uplifting music. The program features the beloved “Hallelujah” and other favorites from Handel’s Messiah, plus perennial choral-orchestral selections such as ”Cantique de Jean Racine” by Fauré and Mozart’s "Ave verum corpus." Also included are works especially fitting for these times, including Mendelssohn’s “Thanks be to God” from Elijah as an expression of gratitude, “How lovely is thy dwelling place” by Brahms as an expression of comfort for those who have lost loved ones, and "Dona nobis pacem" by J.S. Bach as an expression of the universal quest for peace. A triumphant concert that is part of the MSU Federal Credit Union Showcase Series, this performance is generously sponsored by Provost Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D., and Thomas V. O’Halloran, Ph.D., and a donor family with the hope that you enjoy the concert and reflect upon its message of peace and joy.
