NOTE FROM TED: While some viewers may find this talk helpful as a complementary approach, please consult a mental health professional and do not look to this talk as a substitute for mental health advice. This talk only represents the speaker's personal approach to and understanding of addiction and mental health treatment. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... As mental health and addiction challenges continue to grow, so does our need for meaningful solutions. We often overlook the critical role family and community play in recovery. Mental health and addiction struggles don’t occur in isolation—they are intertwined with our social environments, often spanning generations. In this eye-opening talk, Preston explores the biggest mistakes we make in addressing mental health and addiction stigma and emphasizes the power of family support, community recovery, and normalizing the basics. You’ll learn how investing in free and local resources can transform lives and create a culture of compassion and healing. Discover how families and communities, working together, can break cycles of shame and help make services like coaching, counseling, and support groups as common as going to the gym or hiring a personal trainer. Change is possible, hope is possible, and so is taking a preventative approach to our current mental health and addiction crisis. For two decades, Preston Moore has been a passionate advocate for mental wellness and addiction education. Preston helps organizations, first responders, and schools reduce stigma and increase wellness participation by normalizing basic services like coaching, counseling, and support groups. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
