Welcome to Marbs! The spontaneous birthday bucket list item that I've been excited to experience for the longest time! Although Marbella (particularly Puerto Banus) comes with its own reputation, we thought there was something for everyone. We stayed 5 days in the most stunning beachside location - Coral Beach Aparthotel and had the choice of spending most of our time at the port or in Old Town (when we weren't soaking up the sun)! We booked our flights and accommodation separately through Expedia and managed to upgrade to the 2-bedroom apartment with a healthy discount. This was early September and heading out of season, so we spent most days having the pool to ourselves. It was a great spot and offered direct beach access, just a couple of minutes away. When we arrived in Puerto Banus from Alicante airport, this was only a 45-minute trip or so and with the ride-share options, we didn't need too pre-book any taxis with the good value alternative Bolt/Uber apps. The port was a 25-minute stroll from our apartment complex and so we followed the promenade all the way down the beach most evenings. There were a great selection of bars and restaurants as you walked further into the port and although we were expecting crazy prices, it was pretty decent. You could dine on the cheaper side life or head to a fancy restaurant, whichever floats your boat. Old Town was my favourite location, again only 15 minutes by taxi. Between the tapas taverns and boutique shops, we found a very scenic square outside the small church, which often had musical acts performing in the street. We came here several times for both paella and tapas and loved the typical Spanish lifestyle. Opposite our apartment, there was an Aldi shop which we used most days since we were self catering. The beach also had sun beds you could hire but we left our towels on the pool beds and just ran down over the sand. The beach immediately outside our accommodation was a little pebbly getting in and out of the sea though - so I'd advise swim shoes! The highlight for me was the Astral bar as you enter the port area. You literally can't miss it, it's a huge pirate ship! They served up the best cocktails I've ever had and came with all the trimmings for a decent price. I also discovered my favourite store for all your Gen Z/cool electronic accessories called Ale-Pop! I bought some flamingo and musical neon lights in there for a bargain and they're great quality! We did have a little rain one evening which slightly put a spanner in our plans but on the whole, there's always a bar that's open! It was the perfect spot for a short sunny trip and we'd definitely return again in future.
