A Buschenschank is a special kind of Austrian wine tavern where vintners serve their own wine directly in the vineyard – surrounded by nature and steeped in tradition. Unlike the Heuriger, which may also offer warm meals and a broader selection of drinks, the Buschenschank follows stricter rules: only cold food, only self-produced wine, and no soft drinks. The name comes from the “Buschen” – a bundle of pine branches hung outside to signal that the tavern is open. These rustic spots are seasonal, open-air, and deeply rooted in local culture. From Zweigelt and Grüner Veltliner to homemade spreads and smoked meats, the Buschenschank offers a uniquely authentic taste of Austrian wine tradition.
