First recorded in 1962 as Tell Her by Johnny Thunder (Gil Hamilton), it was The Exciters version in 1962/63 that became the more popular version. The Exciters were an American pop/soul group of the 60s, originally all female with one male being added later, and this helped to pave the way for groups such as the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes, and even Dusty Springfield. It was reworked as a more Northern Soul type track by Dean Parrish (Philip Anastasi) in 1966. He was an American singer from New York, born to Italian parents In 1974 it was a hit for a UK glamrock band Hello. There are also versions by a number of other artists including Kenny Loggins, the French singer Claude Froncois, Sonny and Cher, Linda Ronstadt and Bette Midler, and was used in the film 10 Cloverfield Lane.
