You mentioned that you’re in your first trimester and you’ve already lost 17 pounds and want to know if that’s okay or not. And there’s a lot of different factors to consider when it comes to weight loss or gain during pregnancy. No woman should try to lose weight during pregnancy, but some do. Especially during the first trimester and early second when you’re so sick, and severe nausea and vomiting can cause women to lose weight. And in those instances, if you find that you just can’t eat regular meals, you’re throwing up everything that you eat, you’re at risk for dehydration and malnutrition and you should talk with your doctor about it. And they’ll be able to give you some advice on how to manage it and hopefully help you feel better and start gaining the appropriate amount of weight. Generally speaking, the amount of weight a woman should gain during pregnancy is dependent on her pre-pregnancy weight and women who are underweight can expect to gain 40 pounds during the pregnancy - about 35-40. Women who start the pregnancy at a normal weight can expect to gain 25-35 pounds. Women who are overweight may gain 15-25 pounds and those who are obese may gain nothing at all, or at the most 10 pounds or so. And it’s all about a net gain. For those who do lose a little bit of weight at the beginning, the doctor will track it and want to see them gain weight at the appropriate time if they need to. Ultimately, I suggest talking with your doctor about it and, based on their knowledge of your circumstances, they’ll be able to give you tailored information and advice about whether the weight you are losing is safe for you or not. Generally speaking, the amount of weight a woman should gain during pregnancy is dependent on her pre-pregnancy weight. And this is the net gain, so yeah you might lose a little bit in the beginning but the doctor will track it, make sure you’re not losing too much, and want to see the proper amount of weight gained over time. So for a woman who’s underweight, she can expect to gain 35-40 pounds and for a woman who’s a normal weight at the beginning of the pregnancy, she can expect to gain 25-35 pounds. For those who are overweight, it may only be 15-20 or 25ish pounds, and for those who are obese, they may not gain any weight at all, or at the most about 10 pounds or so. So ultimately I suggest talking with your doctor about your circumstances and, based on their knowledge of your history and everything that’s going on right now during the pregnancy, they’ll be able to give you tailored information and advice about the weight that you’ve lost and determine if intervention is warranted for you.
