Corinne takes us on a day trip with her friend Janet shopping to Philipsburg on the friendly island of St Maarten - St Martin. Minutes from my villa and townhouse in Dawn Beach, Philipsburg is a shopping haven with stores featuring designer clothing Jewelry, electronics, watches and local clothing and gifts. It is duty-free so consequently bargains are everywhere to be had! Shopping in Philipsburg, indeed just walking around Philipsburg makes you realise just how friendly people are in St Maarten. We had a great reaction making the video from both locals and tourists in Philipsburg. I beleive some 2 million tourist come to St Maarten every year by cruise ship and you can see why. St Maarten is one of the most popular islands for tourism, with huge numbers of repeat visitors renting villas. We had fun wandering around Front Street in Philipsburg, and through the alleys to the Boardwalk. Apparently Philipsburg the capital of St Maarten was founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch navy, and quickly the settlement became a bustling center of international trade, which of course it still is!
