Some of the best cruising grounds in the United States are found in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, on the south shore of Lake Superior. Our home base in Superior, WI is about 50 nautical miles away. After several years of making this trip, we found that a week is not long enough to be able to really enjoy the area when you are limited by travel time and weather. So, we decided to take a longer vacation this year--two weeks to allow for ample travel time (potty breaks for our dogs) and weather delays. And because we are on a timeline, we are not able to wait for a day with perfect wind... so we usually end up motoring most of the way there. But so much for the negatives... Lake Superior is magnificently beautiful, and it is a privilege to be able to navigate these waters, no matter which manner of propulsion is used! (But sailing is always preferred!) Our pre-departure checklist included one very significant appointment for our "temporary" foster doberman, Victor. After a long summer of heartworm treatment, keeping him quiet and inactive, he is FINALLY heartworm free and ready to run! But he's not going far... stay tuned for more on that! :) Our first day of travel was a fairly short hop (25 nautical miles) to Port Wing. Sadly we had to motor... but it was still a lovely day out on the Big Lake.
