The Madigas are traditionally associated with leatherwork and drumming as their main occupations. They belong to a broader group of people historically known as the Dalits (formerly known as "Untouchables"). Over time, the community has been involved in various socio-economic changes, but their history and social dynamics are deeply rooted in the caste system and struggles for equality. The Madiga community, like many other Scheduled Castes, had to endure centuries of discrimination and marginalization under the traditional caste system, which relegated them to the lowest positions in society. They were often assigned tasks that were considered "polluting" by higher caste groups, such as handling animal skins, leatherworking, and other menial jobs.
