My first introduction to karate taught me to side kick with the “blade of my foot”, luckily, my first taekwondo coach set me straight about the power and efficacy of side kicking with the heel. It just made sense. But I looked into the science behind it anyway, and boy oh boy, when you understand what the human skeleton looks like and how the laws of physics work, the fact that anyone ever taught side kicks with the blade of the foot (ie: the fifth metatarsal) is absolutely mind boggling. It’s dumb… like really, really dangerously dumb. You don’t have blades on your feet! (Unless you’re that dude from Roadhouse who was too stupid to have a good time) And let’s take a look at how Joe Rogan locked out his linear kicks to get that tremendous knock back effect he’s so well known for. Make sure to squeeze your glutes on the lockout… I don’t think I mentioned that in this video, but it’s kind of important. Ramsey Dewey is an MMA coach and fight commentator based in Shanghai, China.
