On 26 March ILAC hosted a side event at this year's Brussels V Conference. "Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region". The ILAC event - Justice systems adrift: what can be done to prevent further justice system divisions in Syria - was a pre launch of our coming report which is an ILAC rule of law assessment of Syria. Following its Syria report from 2017, ILAC has taken a renewed look at the capacity of existing justice institutions and the legal profession in Syria. Through interviews with local legal professionals in different geographical areas across all of Syria, the report attempts to capture the current state of the rule of law in Syria. Given the overwhelming justice needs of people affected by ten years of conflict, it is important to take stock of existing capacity in the justice sector and to discuss what available avenues there may be going forward. This presentation was followed by a panel discussion with Mikael Ekman, ILAC Senior Legal Advisor and lead editor on the report, Bassam Alahmad, Executive Director of Syrians for Truth and Justice, Zahra Albarazi, co-director at the Syrian Legal Development Programme and moderated by Agneta Johansson, ILAC Executive Director. We thank our panelist and everyone who took the time to participate in the event. OBS: the webinar is in English only. Stay tuned for the report on https://ilacnet.org
