Band saluting the crew and royal couple STORYLINE A replica of the 18th Century trading ship, the East Indiaman Götheborg, was officially named by Queen Silvia of Sweden on Friday. Hundreds of dignitaries from around the world attended the ceremony at the original vessel's home-port of Gothenburg. It was on the homeward voyage from a sailing expedition to China in 1745 that one of the Swedish East India Company's ships foundered in the middle of Gothenburg harbour. The East Indiaman had deviated from its proper course and ran aground on a well-known underwater rock. It rapidly took on water and sank with its entire cargo. Over 200 years later, in 1984, the Swedish Underwater Archaeology Society made a ground breaking discovery of the sunken ship. It was decided that a replica would be built under the newly formed SOIC (Swedish East India Company), which would implement the plans necessary to recreate a 1:1 copy. Built using the same craftsmanship and materials as in the 18th Century, the replica ship is some 50 metres long with a breadth of 11 metres. She is 47 metres tall and displaces 1250 tonnes. The vessel's alignments and equipment are based on archive information as well as measurements that were taken from the original, excavated Götheborg. Some exceptions have, however, been necessary in view of modern marine safety regulations. While the exterior presents an 18th Century appearance, the outside planking carries all the modern equipment required for the ship to meet present-day classification rules. In 2005 the East Indiaman Götheborg will embark on an expedition to China. En route it will make stops at ports in Spain, Brazil, South Africa, and Jakarta, before continuing on to its historical destination of Guangzhou (canton) in China, where a big welcoming ceremony is expected. It is expected to arrive back in Gothenburg in September 2007.
