Utah Biomass Resource Group put on a demonstration biochar burn as part of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation led Wuda Ogwa (Bear River Massacre Site) restoration project in Preston, Idaho. Join us on this time lapse video as Darren McAvoy tells us about the history of the site and the process of creating biochar from the invasive species found on the land. Event participants were able to learn about the restoration work that is taking place, as well as get some hands-on experience making biochar! This time lapse videos shows 3 types of in field biochar production using Ring of Fire flame screen process, a UBET Oregon kiln, and an open pile burn. This modular Ring of Fire system can travel in the back of a Subaru making it easy to reach those difficult defensible places. Firebox methods are a fantastic way to reduce hazardous fuels quickly and with very low emissions. This can process about 10 to 15 tons per day of biomass. The UBET Oregon kiln takes a bit more work to move around and is effective at processing smaller amounts. A biochar bake in this system might yield a cubic yard from 3-4 cubic yards of biomass in a couple hours. The big box biochar system was in a field about a mile away from this open burn opportunity so there is only a photo of it on the video. An experience operator working the Big Box Biochar can process 50 tons of biomass a day into about 15%-20% residual biochar with a high carbon ratio around 80%-85%. It is a very efficient process that also operates well in windy conditions. Location: The restoration site is four miles north of Preston, ID, on Hwy 91, on the west side of the highway. Parking is located at the DUP memorial, just north of the bridge crossing the Bear River. It is across the highway from Riverside RV resort; address is 1900 US 91, Preston, ID. Dates: February 20th 21st of 2023. US Biochar Initiative was on site to assist with the education and outreach program. Big thanks to Darren McAvoy.
