►https://www.youtube.com/thearmenshow?... What are internal family systems in terms of therapy? How are shame and guilt different and meant to be worked on? What does it take to bring about tangible change in a person's well-being? Guest therapist Dr. Martha Sweezy joins myself and co-host Rebecca Faith Lawson on episode 415 to discuss these topics and her breadth of experience in the therapy field. Having worked in community mental health at the outpatient department of the Cambridge Health Alliance for 18 years as a therapist, supervisor and the associate director of the DBT program, Dr. Martha Sweezy has experience with a wide variety of mental health challenges, many related to the sequelae of trauma. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and a clinical and program development consultant at Cambridge Health Alliance. Until January, 2015, she was the Associate Director and Director of Training of DBT at Cambridge Health Alliance. In addition to being the author of several articles, she is a co-editor or co-author of eight books related to IFS. 0:00 Intro 6:23 Why IFS? 8:16 Example of IFS 16:45 Navigating through to reach people 17:49 How to know if reaching a person? 21:19 Inner child frozen in time 22:58 Shame and guilt 25:30 Approaching shame and guilt differently 34:04 Why is shaming prevalent? 35:30 The external attaching to the internal 38:01 How people respond to life differently 39:37 What therapy does and needs to be 44:30 Parts of a person that are sensitive or problematic 50:24 Where self-esteem originates from 53:34 Esteem through relationships 55:24 Difficult cases of people to reach 56:37 Pinpointing how to reach hardened individuals 58:11 Letting things go, or not 1:01:08 Forgiveness in therapy 1:02:25 Forgiveness, Christianity, and validation 1:05:05 Family dynamics of forgiveness for validation 1:06:44 Children feeling left out or not heard 1:08:33 A lack of warmth 1:09:44 The past in the present 1:12:10 Guiding people in Martha's life 1:12:49 Fulfillment from therapy 1:14:03 Advice to beginning therapist 1:16:24 Outro
