In 1960, 95% of the textiles purchased in the United States were made here. Today, that number is closer to 3%. At the same time, much of the skilled textile workforce is nearing retirement. Thousands of students live in communities shaped by this industry, yet many don’t know these careers exist. The Textile Innovation Engine of North Carolina is working to change that. In partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction – @ncpublicschools – teachers helped develop classroom-ready materials and a digital textile career map that connects students to real pathways in engineering, science, design, and advanced manufacturing. Today, more than 5,000 students are using this tool to explore careers rooted in their own communities. In this video, you’ll see how classroom learning connects directly to career pathways, and how students are beginning to see a future in modern textile manufacturing.
