If your Boxster exhibits strong crankcase vacuum, excessive oil consumption, smoke, or a hard-to-remove oil cap while the engine is running, it is most likely due to a failed air/oil separator (AOS). The AOS is an emissions device that uses the natural vacuum of the engine to recycle blowby gases leftover from the combustion process and regulate crankcase pressure by feeding the excess vapors back into the engine through the intake. This prevents venting harmful hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. When the internal diaphragm tears, vacuum increases dramatically and oil is pulled into the combustion chambers, causing drivability issues and contamination. In this article, we will walk through replacing the AOS on a 986 Boxster using an OE replacement made by Febi/Bilstein as well as a Porsche Genuine breather hose.
