Genetic ancestry testing promises answers about who you are and where you come from — but what happens when the results turn your world upside down? In this thought-provoking TEDx talk, Professor Emma Kowal from Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, explores how at-home DNA tests are reshaping ideas of family, kinship, and personal identity. This talk explores how DNA testing and genetic ancestry tests can uncover surprising family connections, the social and emotional impact of genetic discoveries, and how ancestry testing challenges traditional ideas of kinship, heritage, and identity. It also encourages viewers to reflect on the questions to ask before taking an at-home DNA test. Watch now to rethink what really makes a family and explore the hidden power of your genetic story. Professor Emma Kowal is an anthropologist whose work examines the intersections of science, medicine, and Indigenous studies. A former medical doctor and public health researcher, she is Professor of Anthropology and founder and co-convenor of the Science and Society Network at Deakin University, with prior leadership roles at the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics and the Alfred Deakin Institute. An award-winning scholar and past President of the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), she is the author of Haunting Biology (2023), exploring science and Indigeneity in Australia. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
