We say 1500cc car engine, but what does the cc actually mean? A cubic centimeter (cc) is a measure of volume, which in this case is the displacement of the engine. This is the (number of cylinders multiplied by the swept cylinder volume). The swept volume of a cylinder is the cylinder cross section area times the piston stroke length. 1000 cc = one litre. So a 1500 cc engine is the same displacement as a 1.5 litre engine. Smaller engines such as those used in motorcycles usually have their displacement expressed in cc’s (Eg. 50cc, 250cc, 600cc, 1000cc, 1400cc etc.) , whereas larger vehicles will typically use litres (Eg. 1.0L, 1.4L, 2.0L, 3.0L, 7.0L etc.) Before the 80's US-made cars had displacements measured in cubic inches, sometimes written as Cu, CI or Cu In. Approximately 60 cubic inches = 1 litre. So the big V8 engines of the 60's and 70’s muscle cars of 427 Cu In were like 7 litre engines. Of course a large displacement can burn more fuel and air mixture and thus produce more power per cylinder stroke, so larger displacement usually means more power, all other things being equal; but all things aren't always equal. A large displacement engine can often produce less power than a smaller displacement engine, and this can be due to a lower compression ratio, less efficient fuel/air mixing, smaller intake and exhaust ports, and a lack of forced induction. Large displacement engines are typically heavier when using a similar design, so high performance cars will sometimes try and get more power from a smaller engine by using more costly design features and exotic materials. To make races competitive, often they are limited to engine displacements under a certain size. Like comment share and subscribe.....🙃🚩 Click the Bill icon for more future updates....🙃🚩
