Roger has been visiting and guiding in Shetland since 2016 and in the last few years has considered the possibility of a paddling around. This is the longer film of Zoe and Rogers paddle. This year Roger was turning 60 and it seemed like the perfect opportunity, to do something significant. Three weeks were set aside although due in part to an amazing high pressure system the swell on the whole was super small. We started in Walls on the west coast because a NE/E wind and swell was active and we wanted to gain protection on the west coast and warm up to conditions. It had been a while since we both had paddled fully laden expedition boats. Day four we reached Fethaland soon after lunch. It had been a wonderful mornings paddle and a significant mile stone, reaching the mostly northern point of the mainland. A waterfall called Warie Gill as was Gruna Stack were the highlight's other than an amazing settled sea state. We decide to set up camp early and enjoy and early dinner, followed by a walk up to the beacon. The following morning was a midge nightmare! It was a quick as we could pack away and a decision to leave breakfast until we could find a suitable island with more of a breeze! In the Nine years Roger had been coming to Shetland, midges had never really been experienced. High humidity and settled weather is likely to have accelerated their life cycle and reproduction! North of Lunning Head, now on the east coast we saw two Minke whales, hearing them first, and soon after we had a close otter sighting as we eddy hoped our way up against the tide at Lunning Sound. We managed a supermarket shop and good lunch and a coffee at Fjara Cafe Bar, partway through day five. Day seven we rounded Sumburgh Head, with the current with us and based on Zoes input. The swell on the west coast was changing to 15ft (4.5 mt) and so we decided to spend a few nights at Sumbrough Hotel. This allowed us to escape the midges, wash kit/clothes, have a break and use our legs walking for a change. After three days off the water we headed on around Scatness point which was the fastest bouncy current we came across. We were both pleased that we had waited for the west coast to settle down, as we could really enjoy Fitful Head, soaring around us was Rogers favourite, the Fulmar, with their wing tips skimming the water and thousands of puffins bobbing about. Day thirteen we paddled into Walls completing the loop and with nine days on the water and four days off. We paddled 315 km.
