Located in the county of Staffordshire, and around seven miles northeast of Stoke-on-Trent, is the town of Leek. Geographically, Leek is situated in the Staffordshire Moorlands, along the River Churnet, and just outside the Peak District National Park at its southwestern fringe. Its name is speculated to derive directly from the leek vegetable itself from Old English or Old Norse. At the northwestern corner of the town centre is the Church of St Edward the Confessor. Featured at the end of the walk, this dates back to the 13th century, with additions up to the 16th century and some 19th century restoration. Other notable churches in the town include the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary, seen at the very start of the walk, and the Anglican Church of St Luke, seen just after the 13-minute mark; both of which date from the 19th century. In 1207 King John granted a market charter to Leek. The town's most significant historic industry is, arguably, silk. This had its origins in the 17th century, reaching a peak in the mid to late 19th century before going into a gradual decline in the aftermath of the First World War. In 1849 a railway station opened in Leek. This formed part of the Churnet Valley Line, which linked Uttoxeter to the Cheshire village of North Rode. The station closed to passengers in 1965, and to freight in 1970, as part of the Beeching cuts where over 2,000 stations across Britain were closed in order, supposedly, to encourage road travel. By 1988 the Churnet Valley Line was shut down entirely, however it has since been reopened in sections as a heritage railway, reaching as far north as Leek Brook (2 miles south of Leek town centre), with talks of extending it into Leek itself. The town is accessible via direct buses from Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent, Buxton, Ashbourne and various other nearby locations. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
