The Back of the Blade Up can be very fast and dynamic particularly on the exit when a moderate to strong back eddy is present, and it doesn’t require too much investment from the athlete. But it can also result in significant time loss or penalties through poor edge control. It is regularly used when the gate is set over 1 metre deep in the eddy, which is strong but stable.
