Inside the Navajo Nation Fair Pow Wow — Drums, Dancers & Community

The Navajo Nation Fair Pow Wow in Window Rock, Arizona is one of the biggest celebrations of Diné culture, featuring powerful drum groups, traditional dancers, and community gatherings. Alongside the pow wow, the Navajo Nation Fair also hosts parades, rodeos, carnival rides, princess pageants, Navajo Song & Dance, and concerts — making it one of the largest Native American fairs in the country. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ya’at’eeh! Aaron Tsosie here — the person behind the camera! This year I set a big goal for myself: to cover all four Navajo Nation Fair parades and pow wows. Each fair brings so much more than just the pow wow — rodeos, carnival rides, princess pageants, Navajo Song & Dance, concerts, and even big-name performers like Lil Jon at the Navajo Nation Fair! One day, I’d love to work directly with the fairs and cover everything — that would be a dream. But for now, I’m a solo team, and I’m pushing myself step by step to get there. The Pow Wow Experience Like any event, there were a few challenges. The artificial turf was uneven, and between dips, overlaps, and rocks underneath, I found myself tripping or when I drop to my knees while filming my shins were on top of rocks. The lighting was just enough to see, but I had to brighten the footage digitally to make it clear for this video. Another difference this year — there were no official head drums or head staff. Instead, each day had new head staff and head drums chosen. Personally, I would’ve liked to see one group honored with carrying that responsibility for the whole pow wow. But the good far outweighed the bad: 🎶 The sound system by N8ive Tones (Antone’s system) was absolutely top notch. 🥁 The lineup of drums was incredible, with so many strong groups showing up. 🎤 My friend and pow wow MC Trevor Foster (who I carpooled with from Phoenix) kept everything moving with humor, respect, and consistency. He’s truly one of the best up-and-coming MCs. 👣 Arena Director Albert Francis was constantly walking the circle, keeping everything organized — something you don’t always see when arena directors stay seated. 👩‍⚖️ Head Judge Kenny Donaghey did an outstanding job selecting knowledgeable judges for each dance category and kept the contest running smoothly. I also wanted to acknowledge The Gourd Dance! Gourd Dance MC, Mike Salabiye and Gourd Arena Director Adrian Yazzie. Head Gourd Matthew John, and Head Singer Jason Smith Community & Support Sometimes it’s just a small group of dedicated individuals putting in an incredible amount of effort to make these events happen. But when you add in all the friends, extended family, and community members coming together, that’s when I realize these events are even more special. And finally — thank you to everyone who comes up to shake my hand or give me a fist bump.
