Foraging for The “Shaggy Ink Cap” Coprinus comatus

Check out these shaggy tubular eggs on sticks, the #ShaggyInkCap or #Coprinuscomatus. They are one of my favorites and played a huge part in inspiring me to learn more about mushrooms back in 2017. They are saprobic mushrooms (growing on decaying organic matter/compost vs primary wood decay). They favor areas of disturbance and are found often along road ways, sidewalks, and on lawns. They have A relatively fast fruiting cycle, they go from small egg to stalked tube to melted into a black gooey mess within 24 to 48 hours usually. They are an excellent edible mushroom, but have an incredibly short shelflife (a quick blanch or microwave will stabilize them). These mushrooms starts literally melting into a black goo, this is how they spread their spores. This process is known as deliquescence, resulting in a black spore laden liquid that drips onto the substrate seeding the next generation of this fungus. Unlike other ink caps, this species does not contain Coprine and can safety be consumed with alcohol. Coprinus comatus mycelium is also nematophagus fungus, meaning it captures and eats nematode worms for nitrogen. . I love the ethereal nature of these mushrooms, it is so awesome to find a big cluster and watch as they literally melt in front of your eyes (or sometimes in your basket). I’ve been wanting to order myself some spawn and seed them into my yard, I must time lapse this mushroom.
