This video provides a very gentle introduction of how to program with Python. The video assumes you have no background in any computer programming language. Python is one of the most popular computer programming languages in the world. If you are new to computer programming, it is an excellent language to begin learning with due to its easy syntax and wide applicability the numerous applications that range anywhere from data science to mathematics to the particular area of interest on this channel - geographic information systems or GIS. A free and open source python software package is used to teach Pyhton in this video so you can get started right away learning how write and use Python code. Follow these links to access to the software, code files and data sets used in the video: Software: Python download - https://www.python.org/downloads/ QGIS - The free and open source GIS software used in the video: https://www.qgis.org Anaconda – Contains Jupyter Notebooks shown in the video: https://www.anaconda.com/distribution/ Code files: Python code files and GIS datasets – All of the code files shown in in the video along with GIS data sets used in the QGIS/Python demonstration are available for free to download: http://gisfordisastermanagement.com/#... Topics discussed in this video will include: Installing Python and using a Python IDE (Integrated Development Environment), basic computer programming concepts applicable to any computer programming language such as: variables, lists, conditional statements, looping, functions, error handling, import statements, basic object oriented programming concepts such as objects, events, and methods, and standard Python libraries. The video also provides examples of some common tasks you can do with python computer code such as accessing content on the internet, file input and output (I/O), parsing, comma separated value (CSV) files and using python with other software packages such as a QGIS, geographic information systems (GIS) software. I also give you some ideas on where you can go next with Python in terms of data science applications via a brief introduction to Jupyter Notebooks.
