"Abide with me" by Henry Francis Lyte, to "Eventide" by William Henry Monk. Messines/Mesen, Remembrance Concert for the town of Mesen Remembrance Day, 11th November, 2016 Emma Brown and the West Yorkshire Police Band www.ejebrown.com Mesen ("Messines") is a small town in Flanders with a population of less than 1,000. During the First World War it was virtually destroyed by fighting in 1914, 1917, and 1918. In just three weeks in 1917, nearly 50,000 soldiers died in Mesen. Many went missing or were unidentifiable after death. ABIDE WITH ME Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
