Tielman Susato (c. 1510/15 – after 1570) Basse Danse Bergeret from the "Danserye" Arranged by Peter Parker (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb31..., with edits by Vance Kreider and Vagul Mahadevan Video produced by Vagul Mahadevan and Vance Kreider Justin Paul, Erik Winston – Trumpet Senna Keesing – Horn Benjamin Chang – Trombone William McLaughlin – Tuba Tielman Susato—a composer, instrumental musician, and music publisher of the Renaissance, based in Antwerp—is best known today for the 1551 "Danserye," the collection of almost 60 instrumental dances from which the present selection originates. This movement’s title “basse danse” (French: “low dance,” possibly referring to its peasant origins) classifies it as a popular court dance of the time, while “bergeret” refers to a pastoral quality. As was often the case during the period, Susato’s dances (which fall somewhere between original compositions and arrangements of popular tunes) were scored for “instruments of all kinds”; the relative simplicity of the parts ensured their suitability for a wide audience of recreational amateur musicians and chamber groups. His music continues to be popular, and it fits brass ensembles quite well.
