Shunting in the Redlynch Cane Fields | The Cairns Railfan

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the channel with a new video returning to northern Cairns to see sugarcane train action at Redlynch. Now what makes this video different from previous times in northern Cairns? Well today we will be seeing shunting in the sugarcane fields of Redlynch themself; instead of just at the depot and further north! To spice things up we will also be briefly chasing the northbound empties train that runs from Gordonvale to Redlynch! For context; these sugarcane trains are ran by the Mulgrave Central Mill which crushes sugarcane in Gordonvale; about 10 kilometres south of Cairns and is owned by MSF Sugar. They operate on 610mm (2ft) gauge and have an approximately 200 km long track network. The Gordonvale - Redlynch corridor of this network is especially interesting for it's almost 10 kilometres uninterrupted suburban running once reaching Edmonton and heading through to Redlynch. The line used to be operated by the Hambledon Mill located in Edmonton until it closed in 1991 and it's rollingstock and rail lines went to Mulgrave operation. Much of the area had been rapidly urbanised with the now urban corridor using to being almost all sugarcane fields resulting in the unique line through the suburbs of Cairns that we see today.
