Our hair looks simple on the outside; but trust me, its structure is way more complicated. The part of the hair that’s above the skin is called the hair shaft, and the part below the skin is the hair root. If we check out the cross-section of the shaft, we’ll see three layers. The outer layer is called the cuticle, which is made up of flat cells. These cells overlap each other like tiles on a roof. This layer’s main job is to protect the inner parts of the hair. Inside the cuticle is the cortex. This part is made of keratin, which gives strength to our hair. It also contains melanin, the pigment responsible for our hair color. How melanin affects different hair colors? Well, we have covered that in another video. Now, inside the cortex, there’s an even deeper layer called the medulla. The medulla has air spaces that make the hair light-and-flexible. But here’s the thing—it’s only found in thick hair, like head-hair, beard, mustache, armpit hair etc. These are called terminal hairs. On the other hand, those tiny, thin hairs on our body—called vellus hairs—do not have medulla at all. That’s about the part of the hair above the skin. But the part that connects the hair to our skin and nourishes it - is inside the skin, in a structure called the follicle. #shorts #hair #science #sciencefacts #sciencefun #scienceexperiment #scienceandfun
