FD23: Market Stall Design Competition

For small business vendors one of the most difficult elements of attending markets is the actual setup. Sure, one can bring a tent and a fold-out table, but it’s still cumbersome and takes a bit of creativity to make a business standout among a sea of tents and fold-out tables. Now, add to that equation older adults, and the difficulty of mobility and accessibility with setting up a kiosk. The challenge? Create a market stall for a vendor who’s older than 50. The designs needed to be easy to assemble for all ages using very little hardware and fit into a vehicle, stay on budget, and all elements had to be digitally fabricated. Through the AARP Community Challenge grant program and nationwide Livable Communities initiative with Toyota, FD23 designers created easy-to-assemble, digitally fabricated market stalls to quickly transform car spaces to people places. During the Pleasant Grove Better Block, their designs were put to the test as vendors sold from them.
