Despite now being a worldwide phenomenon, Star Wars was not always a guaranteed hit. Even its creator George Lucas was unsure how his weird little space movie would do, but he did always know that he wanted to make a Sequel to it. So, just in case he was able to make Episode V but it couldn't live up to his vision of The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas commissioned a draft for a low-budget Episode 5 just in case. The result was Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster and even though Star Wars became a smash success, they didn't want the outline to go to waste... and so, it was released as a book and the very first entry in the Star Wars Expanded Universe and later adapted into a comic book.
