He showed up to land where millions of people already lived, and what followed was colonization, enslavement, and genocide. That’s why we recognize #IndigenousPeoplesDay instead, to shift focus to the people who were actually here and recognize the cultures, histories, and contributions that have been erased or ignored. I live on Tongva land. The Tongva people have been here for thousands of years, caring for the land we now call Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Valley, and Orange County. Their knowledge of the environment and sustainable practices shaped this region long before colonization. They survived genocide and are still here today, continuing to seek recognition, sovereignty, and the rights that have been denied to them for centuries. Indigenous Peoples’ Day isn’t actually about ragging on CC but acknowledging that reality and honoring Indigenous communities who resist erasure and work to preserve their cultures. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #TongvaLand #LandBack #IndigenousHistory
