In this video, R.T. Custer from Colorado's Vortic Watch Company explains the difference between a Wind Indicator or Up/Down Indicator and a Power Reserve Indicator when it comes to antique American railroad-grade pocket watches. In summary, a wind indicator, also known as a mainspring barrel indicator, or simply an Up/Down indicator is a feature found on some antique American pocket watches that were used on railroads in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is a small hand on the top of the dial of the watch, near 12 o'clock, that shows the amount of tension or power remaining in the mainspring, which is the power source of the watch. This allows the user to know when they need to wind the watch to maintain accurate timekeeping. A power reserve indicator, on the other hand, is another feature that can be found on some antique American pocket watches. It is a mechanism that shows how much power is remaining in the watch's power source, usually by means of a hand on the dial or sub-dial. It allows the user to know how much time is remaining until the watch stops running. This is useful for a watch that is not worn regularly, so the user can know when to wind it. Power reserve indicators are typically found only on modern watches that are manually wound. In short, a wind indicator tells you when to wind the watch, or more precisely, how long it's been since you've wound the watch, and a power reserve indicator tells you how much power is left in the watch.
