Dr. Rowe shows easy exercises to quickly relieve piriformis muscle tightness and pain. The piriformis muscle is a major cause of pain around the buttock and posterior thigh. What usually causes this is a blend of muscle weakness and tightness that leads to strain. If it gets bad enough, it may lead to piriformis syndrome (or pseudo-sciatica) that can cause pain, numbness, and tingling down the thigh and into the leg.
