(15 May 2017) LEADIN: More than 100 vintage cars have taken over the streets of Minsk for a festival celebrating old fashioned automobiles. Vintage and classic car enthusiasts gather in the Belarusian capital every year for the "Retro-Minsk" event. STORYLINE: A parade of vintage cars turning back the clock in Minsk. These old automobiles are the kings of the road, cruising through Victory Square on their way to the festival ground. The Retro-Minsk festival is now in its 10th year and attracts visitors from Belarus, other former Soviet states, and sometimes even further afield. This year's participants brought their vintage and classic vehicles from Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Finland, Estonia and Spain. The festival parade ends up in October Square where the cars are parked for visitors to look at. More than 100 cars from various decades feature in the show. Some car owners dress in retro outfits to match the era of their vehicles. Participant Andrei Smoglev and his family have come all the way from Moscow with their 1940s Buicks - and they're all dressed accordingly. "We vacation here all the time. Our cars stay in garages for long periods of time waiting for these types of events, and we wait with them. So there's always a special atmosphere, especially here in Minsk," he says. "This is impossible in Moscow, where I'm from, because nobody wants to block roads, there are no squares such as this, and maybe they don't have the interest. But here, we come here every year with pleasure, we have a holiday, we already have many friends here. We share this retro atmosphere with our friends, we go somewhere back in time. So we show our cars, we are proud of them, we look at other people's cars." Smoglev says he's a huge fan of old cars. "They are pleasant. The are pleasant to touch, pleasant to ride, pleasant to talk to, it is pleasant to look after them when they break down. I think it's a huge difference: (between) old cars and modern ones." The most important condition for participating in this festival is owning a car that is 40 years old or more. The car must be in good working order and in no need of immediate repairs. Participant Arturas Dunaitis says owning vintage and classic cars is a hobby like any other, but it can easily turn into an obsession. "Some people fish, others ride choppers - motorcycles - others do things such as hunt. Then there's this hobby with automobiles. This is far from cheap but it's all worth it, it makes it all worth it. You can say it's like an illness." The Retro-Minsk festival ran from 12 to 14 May 2017.
