Welcome to “New Way Home” paying homage to the great Danny MacAskill and his classic film, “Way Back Home” ( • Way Back Home w/ Danny MacAskill . Danny and RedBull published WBH on November 16, 2010. At the time, I owned a department store quality mountain bike and I’d never heard of trials. I was instantly captivated when I saw Way Back Home. It is the first YouTube video that I ever saved—I created a playlist called “Cool Stuff” so I would be able to come back and watch again. Over the next 10 years, I watched every Danny MacAskill video I could get my eyes on. And, through Danny, Duncan Shaw, and Ali Clarkson’s Drop and Roll content and a ton of Ali C’s vlogs, I started to learn what Danny was doing on his cool little bikes. It was something very foreign to me, something called “Street Trials.” I still didn’t understand the name or that bike trials was a competitive sport in other parts of the world. Eventually, I figured it out. By March 2020, I was a huge fan of Street Trials. When my state went into Covid lockdown, I decided to order an Inspired Arcade from Tarty Bikes. I didn’t know if I’d be able to learn anything that even remotely resembled what Danny was doing. But I was dedicated to trying. Eventually, I figured out how to do a few things. Enough to have a whole lot of fun over the last five years. In late 2024, I picked up a used Inspired Skye. It’s basically the same bike Danny rides in Way Back Home, except it has due disc brakes. I decide that to celebrate the upcoming 15th Anniversary of Way Back Home and to thank Danny for 15 years of inspiration, I would try my best to remake Way Back Home shot-for-shot, substituting whatever mediocre moves I could muster in place for Danny’s elite riding. Herein, you’ll find no front flips off castles, no back flips, no G turns, no 360s, and no hop whips. But, I hope that if you squint hard enough and lower your expectation enough, I was able to capture the spirit of the film, and at least not offend its legacy. I called this film “New Way Home w/ Todd Cook” because Danny and his film introduced me to a new way of riding (a new way to get home from work). Also, “New Way Home” is an excellent Foo Fighters song about driving through Seattle on your way home. I’ve always loved the song for its reference to the Kingdome, the former home field of my beloved Seattle Mariners. This project has been so much fun. It’s been tiring. It’s taken a lot of planning and creativity to figure out where I could go and what I could ride to try to do justice to the vision I had for this. There are a lot of things I wish I could have done better from a riding standpoint. But considering my limited time (I work full time and have a busy family sports schedule) and limited skills, I’m incredibly happy with the final product. I hope you enjoy it. I also hope it gets you thinking about trials. It’s a great sport. It’s fun, creative, and gives you the opportunity to come stately challenge and year yourself. And it’s more accessible than you might think. If you’re young and intrigued by trials, or you have a few grey hairs like me, I hope you watch this video and think: “Hey, if this old guy can do this stuff, so can I!” Because it’s true. You will probably never be at Danny MacAskill’s level, but I am confident you can do the things I’m doing here, if you want to, you practice, and you stick to it.
