Foi escritora, poetisa e defensora de causas sociais. Escultura feita pelo escultor Nuno Rufino. Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (1699-1792), Marquês de Pombal. Havia nesta zona uma pequena aldeia que foi arrasada pelo terramoto e tsunami de 1755 que tambem destruiu Lisboa... Em 30 de dezembro de 1773, o rei D. José I ordenou-o na criação de uma nova cidade aqui para proteger a região e controlar as atividades transfronteiriças. Foi Ministro do Rei D. José I e o fundador de Vila Real de Santo António. Mandou construir, à semelhança da Baixa de Lisboa. Esta escultura foi executado pelo conceituado escultor português João Cutileiro. Estátua de António Aleixo (1899-1949). Poeta popular algarvio nasceu nesta cidade. Centro de Vila Real de Santo António: Praça Marquês de Pombal. No início era chamada Praça Real. O obelisco monumental foi colocado em 1776 no centro da Praça Real em honra do Rei D. José I.
