Since the end of December, California has been overwhelmed by a “parade of cyclones”. The latest series of heavy rains and strong winds since Sunday has killed at least 17 people. The National Weather Service noted that almost the entire state has received 400-600% more rain than usual in the past few weeks. The storm led to tens of thousands of people being evacuated and left more than 150,000 power consumers without power. Roads in central and northern California have become impassable rivers, leading to school closures and limited mobility exacerbated by fallen trees, mud and mudslides on the state's steep slopes. The deaths, from San Bernardino County in the south to Mendocino County in the north, were mostly caused by falling trees and driving on flooded roads. The National Weather Service said 34 million people in California were at risk of flooding. Officials have ordered wealthy Montecito residents such as Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex to evacuate due to flooding. But just six months ago, celebrities complained about the drought. The extent of the destruction is still unclear.
