Hello, I'm Joan, and this book is called The River is Waiting by Wally Lamb. Now I'm always a sucker for a new Wally Lamb novel. His book I know This Much is True remains one of my all-time favourites. So I was really invested in this before I started. It's the story of a guy called Corby whose life is spiralling out of control. Although he's desperately trying to prove to his wife and to her family that everything's fine, but it really isn't. And suddenly when things go really bad, he finds that he's facing a prison sentence. Much of this book is set within prison, and it's an environment which I believe Wally Lamb knows really well, because I believe that he taught writing to women incarcerated in a prison in Connecticut for a number of years. And you really feel that he knows his way around both the institution and the human condition. It's a story about getting it all wrong, about atoning for it, about redemption, trying to be a better person, and the cost that can come with all of that. I loved it.
