Disease, Disability & Healthcare in Ancient Egypt: LIVE Zoom presentation with Sofia Aziz. Hosted by Sarah Janes for The Explorers Club Palaeopathology is contributing enormously to our understanding of diseases in the ancient world. Many we thought of as modern inflictions have been detected in mummies and skeletal remains recovered from sites around Egypt. In this talk we will be looking at diseases such as tuberculosis, sand pneumoconiosis, leprosy, bubonic plague, poliomyelitis, atherosclerosis, schistosomiasis and even cancer. Injuries caused through interpersonal violence, battle wounds and occupational injuries will be investigated. We will also look at disability in ancient Egypt; how it was conceptualised and what type of treatment, if any, was offered. We will be taking a journey into the fascinating world of the ancient Egyptian practitioners and their healthcare system to explore their understanding of diseases and the efficacy of their treatments.
