One festive incarnation of a recurring Lutheran tune. Recurring in Bach because it appears multiple times in St. Matthew Passion (here's my version of one:    • J.S. Bach - BWV 244 Matthäus-Passion - Cho...  ). In this version from the Christmas Oratorio it is almost unrecognisable, because for once there is no association with the pain and suffering evoked in the Passion. The tune though is the same. It is the tune known as "Herzlich tut mich verlangen", which Bach used in the Passion for setting several stanzas of Paul Gerhardt's hymn "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" ("O Sacred Head, Now Wounded").
