Dr. Jaffer Sheyholislami talks about a personal narrative coupled with critical language policy analysis on the Kurdish, a minoritized language spoken by over 30 million people in the Middle East. Examining the powerful influence of state policies, practices, and ideologies on language status and vitality, the paper highlights the resistance mounted by ethno-linguistic movements and language activism. The symbolic capital of one’s language and its role in cultural identity construction coupled with a growing awareness of linguistic rights and the importance of mother-tongue education has empowered minoritized communities. Despite persistent language ideologies opposing language rights, there is optimism that international organizations, technological advancements, and global interconnectedness will positively impact language policies, practices, and ideologies. As societies grapple with the challenges and opportunities of linguistic diversity, this paper explores the potential for positive change in navigating the complex landscape of language rights and activism.
