Valencia's important status as a connection between Spain and the rest of the Mediterranean led Juanes to be influenced by significant painters of the Italian Renaissance, such as Raphael and Sebastiano del Piombo. Juanes reached his zenith in his canvases for the Saint Steven Retable, painted for the main altarpiece at the church of San Esteban in Valencia around 1562, where they remained until they were acquired by Charles IV around 1800.
