The KMT chairperson by-election takes place on Saturday. Both candidates, Hau Lung-pin and Johnny Chiang, believe their chances will be hurt by low voter turnout due to coronavirus. The party’s promised to do all it can to make voting safe, and not to turn away anyone who makes it to the polling station.KMT party members take to the polls to elect their new chairperson on Saturday. Both candidates are concerned about low voter turnout.Hau Lung-pinKMT chair candidateHow can we keep people safe as they vote? Especially elderly people. I think we have to pay special attention to that. If turnout is low, of course that will give an unfair advantage to whoever can mobilize their supporters best. And later on when people look back, this election would lend itself to different interpretations.Johnny ChiangKMT chair candidateThere are half as many polling stations as last time. It’s very inconvenient. Fewer people are planning to come out and vote. So as I have repeatedly said before, we ought to have more polling stations. The party has stuck with its plan to go to the polls on Saturday, despite the risks of COVID-19. Some fear the party will suffer a backlash if a voter or a polling official should catch the virus on the day. The KMT''s Cultural and Communications Committee has published a statement asking party members to take their own temperature at home before going out to vote, and to wear a mask.Hung Yu-hsiKMT spokeswomanOur polling station staff will take their temperatures beforehand, and wear masks throughout the day. They will be ensuring that not too many people enter the polling station, that there is a certain amount of space between each voter, and so on. To avoid any controversy around members being prevented from voting due to fevers, or mere suspected fevers, the party says it will not check members’ temperatures at polling stations. Instead it will focus on maintaining physical space between people to minimize contact.
